D evelopmental biologist Sean B. Carroll, a professor of molecular biology and genetics and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studies how animal diversity is generated. Carroll, who serves on the PNAS Editorial Board, counts among today’s prominent researchers in a subspecialty of developmental biology dubbed “evo-devo.” He is the author of a number of popular books on the topic and writes a monthly column for The New York Times. Carroll talks with PNAS about two of his abiding interests: evo-devo and writing about it for general audiences.
